Hans Jäger, as much as it saddens me, has been put on 🧊. The reasons are many. Government funding that fell through, but not because the pitch was bad, they liked the pitch, but because their support goes mainly to a handful companies that require the funds to stay alive. Makes me sick to think that my TV fees are only used to line the pockets of a few German productions that haven’t made a bold or international competitive movie in decades. Money remained the issue and as a big part fell through so did the motivation of some of the people involved. I always knew it’s gonna be a low budget film and I was very open about it form the start. But some seemed to have ignored that part and were unwilling to accept that. Instead of calling in favors to make this happen, they handed out favors for their own good. Instead of passion, I’ve encountered a rather unimaginable narrow minded work ethic. Instead of creativity I’ve been met with strict adherence to industry standards. Others were just casting out the net and tried to attach themselves to as many productions as possible to later jump off the ones that don’t pay enough. It took me a while to realize what I want and need for this production to work and be enjoyable. Don’t get me wrong, there were many that went out of their way to help me, including some of the cast and crew that worked for almost nothing, but also and especially my friends and wife. I wish they would have gotten the appreciation they deserved! And yes I don’t have the experience to run a set and production of that size on my own and at the end it was my project and my fault if I didn’t step in earlier to set things right. Whatever critique I’m handing out, most of it goes to me. After that, I went back to the writing desk, I drew out a plan to get more funding. I was on the way to overcome the initial hiccups and the incomplete filming of the teaser that left me with footage that doesn’t tell anything yet. Then 2020 happened. If the boat wasn’t sinking before, it was now. Just before drowning I made it to shore. Hans Jäger is not dead, but I know it requires a lot more work, time, money, and passion to make it happen.
